Graves’ Disease is one of the more common causes of hyperthyroidism, or over-activity of the thyroid gland. When the thyroid gland is over-productive, it can cause a number of problems throughout the body, including inflammation of the tissue surrounding the eye. This is commonly referred to as thyroid eye disease (TED). If not addressed, thyroid eye disease can permanently impair your vision. In addition, hyperthyroidism can cause the eyelids to retract, making it difficult to close your eyes properly, resulting in bulging eyes and/or baggy eyelids. Eyelid retraction surgery can correct the effects of thyroid eye disease, restoring the eyelids to their normal appearance and function.

Eyelid Retraction Surgery

After inflammation of the tissue surrounding the eye has been addressed, eyelid retraction surgery can correct the eyelids to improve their appearance and functionality. The retractor muscles of the upper lid are loosened, allowing the upper lid to lower to a normal position. If the lower eyelid has retracted, collagen grafts can help support it so that your eyes can close normally again.

In most cases, eyelid retraction surgery can be performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthetic, and recovery times are minimal.
